Corpus Christi Man Facing Criminal Charges In Car Accident

A Corpus Christi man is facing criminal charges after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a used car lot, killing his ex-wife and injuring another man, just after 2 a.m. on Thursday.
The vehicle was traveling west off of South Padre Island Drive (SPID) when the driver lost control, sending the vehicle across the access road into Rocky’s Auto Sales, hitting eight vehicles in the lot.
“The car apparently went airborne and ended up taking out a telephone pole before landing on top of another parked car in an adjacent yard,” according to police.
A transformer and power to the street were also knocked out, which delayed rescue efforts, according to police.
His passenger, 30, died while trapped inside the vehicle. Another passenger, also trapped, suffered only minor injuries.
The driver, 28, was thrown from the vehicle - he suffered a broken hip and internal injuries.
Alcohol and excessive speed are both main factors of the crash, said CCPD traffic officers. The driver is facing intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault charges.
Police also said it was not the driver’s first run-in with the law. In the past five years, he had been arrested on a variety of charges including assault, DWI and auto burglary. He remains in the hospital.
