Truck Plummets 40-Feet Off Cliff Near Corpus Christi

Eighteen people were injured on Tuesday, when a pickup truck transporting illegal immigrants from Guatemala to Mexico, plummeted 40 feet off a cliff in southwest Texas.

According to authorities, the truck went off the road near Alice, which is about 40 miles west of Corpus Christi, and landed in a gravel pit.

Eleven of the eighteen injured victims remain hospitalized. While the others have been treated and released to Border Patrol Custody.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Leticia Zamarripa says the driver has been charged with illegal immigrant smuggling involving death or serious injury. She did not know whether the driver, Patricio Rebollar, was among those still hospitalized.

The accident is being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Corpus Christi Teen Arrested After Hit-And-Run

A woman, 18, was arrested following a hit and run accident that sent a woman to the hospital Monday night, according to Corpus Christi police.

Police arrived to find the woman, 26, lying in the street at the corner of Daytona and Maryland with a large laceration to the back of her head. According to a witness, she was crossing Daytona when she was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. The witness was able to get the license plate of the vehicle.

Within 30 minutes, the driver called to report the accident. Police picked her up in the 1400 block of Casa de Oro and arrested her and impounded her vehicle. She is being held in Nueces County jail on $2,500 bond for failure to stop and render aid.

The victim was treated and released from Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital.

Baby Unharmed When Car Crashes Through Home

A baby, sitting in his stroller, was nearly hit when a vehicle crashed through his house on Sunday night.

The baby, appeared unharmed, but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. He was less than a year old, police said.

The accident, which occurred near Sarita Street and Baldwin Avenue, is under investigation. Police intend to charge the driver with driving while intoxicated, according to Lt. Nicholas Kless.

It appears the driver lost control of his vehicle while turning onto Baldwin Boulevard and slid, said Kless. His car struck a utility pole and then a parked vehicle causing the parked car to catapult into the home.

The home sustained extensive damages. But thankfully baby is OK!

Report Outlines 10 Most Dangerous Corpus Christi Intersections

Members of Corpus Christi’s Traffic Department and city officials released updated information on the city’s most dangerous intersections.

The monthly report is a collection of data gathered from police reports on all accidents from minor automobile accidents to fatalities and more.

Four of the ten worst listed intersections include Everhart, S.P.I.D, Staples and Saratoga.

Adjusting light timing, adding additional street lights and installing red light cameras are some of the new improvements the Traffic Department is considering implementing. A timeframe to make the proposed changes has yet to be announced.

Bicyclist Struck By Drunk Driver

A pedestrian on a bicycle was struck by a drunk driver this evening, according to police.

The truck, carrying a boat behind it, struck Glenn "Scott" Westfall, 34, on his bicycle. He was transported to the hospital and is currently listed in critical condition with serious injuries, Breedlove said. He's expected to require multiple surgeries.

The victim’s wife was riding her bicycle beside him and witnessed the accident. He was dragged about 300 feet.

“The driver of the truck failed his sobriety test and was arrested for driving while drunk.” said Captain Bill Breedlove with the Corpus Christi Police Department.

The driver of the truck was heading north on Roddfield near South Padre Island Drive when the accident occurred.

KII TV News reports that according to court records, that driver, 57 year old Robert Clement has had six prior run-ins with police including three previous DWI arrests.

Texas Woman Trapped For Half Hour Following Crash

A woman was trapped in her car for thirty-minutes following a single car accident Saturday after allegedly ran into a traffic light.

The accident happened just after 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of Horne and Kostoryz.

According to police, it appears the driver struck the pole at a high rate of speed causing one of the traffic lights to fall. The impact of the crash was so severe the woman and her passenger were trapped inside the cabin of the vehicle.

Rescue was able to quickly remove the passenger, but the driver, who was unconscious, had to be removed using the Jaws of Life. They were transported to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital. The driver was listed in serious condition and the passenger in critical condition.

Speed is definitely a factor and the investigation is ongoing, according to officials.

Driver Flips Vehicle Into Ditch

A Corpus Christi driver who alleges his foot was stuck to the pedal of his vehicle flipped over several times into a ditch on Sunday afternoon.

According to police, the man lost control of his vehicle and rolled over several times in a ditch on FM 2444 near County Road 57.

He was transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital with minor injuries sustained in the car accident and was able to tell police that the accident happened when he couldn’t take his foot off the pedal.

He will be cited for failure to maintain a single line.

Disturbing Trends Revealed In Teen Survey

A recent survey conducted by Allstate Insurance agents in 11 Texas cities reveals disturbing trends.

More than half of the teens questioned said they’ve driven after drinking or they’ve been in a car with a teen driver who had been drinking.

84 percent admit to text messaging or talking on their cell phones while driving and 68 percent have driven so fast they’ve lost control of the vehicle or have been in a car with a teen driver who lost control.

During the first year of driving 56 percent were stopped by police and 48 percent were in an accident. While 36 percent don’t care if they get a speeding ticket.

On a personal note… As the mother of two teenagers, these results are indeed disturbing. I constantly remind my kids to never talk and drive. They also know they can call me if they or their friends have been drinking – no questions asked (until the next morning that is!)

Parents pay a small fortune to insure their young drivers (I know I do) and I find it appalling that so many of them simply don’t care if they get a speeding ticket which would mean a hike in insurance rates.

Parents: talk to your kids and remind them to stay off their cell phones while on the road. Also let them know they can call you day or night and you will get them – no matter the circumstances – safety comes first.

If only more kids would pick up the phone at the right time…

Child Killed In SUV Accident

A child, 8, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition following a car accident Sunday on the Paul Jones overpass. Police are working to piece together what caused the crash.

It appears an SUV carrying a mother and four children was struck by a Land Rover on the eastbound ramp, according to police.

The remaining three children and the mother were also taken to the hospital. Police are unsure if the child thrown from the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.

The Land Rover driver and passenger were not injured. Police plan to question the driver and the mother of the SUV.

"It's a serious enough accident that what we're doing is get pictures, getting measurements, stuff like that to try to be as accurate as possible," CCPD Lt. Gary Hill said.

* Update – John Tatum, 17, was driving the vehicle that struck and killed Brianna Rosales. According to police, Tatum lost control of the Land Rover because he’d been drinking.

Tatum is charged with intoxication manslaughter and his bond was set at $200,000. He is also charged with four counts of assault with a motor vehicle. If convicted, he can spend up to 20 years in prison. #

Teen Run Over By Car At The Beach Suffers Minor Injuries

The word miracle comes to mind… a 15-year-old girl was run over while sunbathing on the beach and she managed to walk away with a few minor injuries, according to police.

Although a car drove over her torso, she sustained only a few minor cuts and bruises, said police.

The accident happened Wednesday near beach marker 197.

Although she appeared to be okay, she was taken to the hospital so she could be checked.

The mishap is a reminder to all, to be careful and to watch where you are driving on the beaches, especially during busy periods, such as spring break which is going on now.
