The estates of Santos Sanic-Lajpop and Esperanza Ambrocio Vicente have filed a wrongful death law suit in Los Angeles County alleging negligence and defective manufacturing/design on behalf of Cooper Tire Company and Toyota Motor Company USA.

Sanic-Lajpop was driving south on Interstate 15 in Utah with his wife and their two children when the left rear tire tread came apart on the couples 1991 Toyota 4 Runner causing the vehicle to swerve and ultimately roll over. Sanic-Lajpop and Vicente were both pronounced dead at the scene. Their two minor children were taken to an area hospital and later released without serious injury. According to an eye witness, tire tread was seen coming off of the vehicles left rear tire shortly before the vehicle rolled off the highway. It was discovered that the tire that came apart was manufactured by Cooper Tire Company.
