Peanut Butter Recalled For Salmonella Contamination

On January 10, 2009, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voluntarily recalled peanut butter products distributed by King Nut, because the products were contaminated with Salmonella.

The peanut butter products were manufactured for King Nut, by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). The product is distributed to large institutions including prisons and schools, not directly to consumers. The recalled products were sold under the labels “Parnell’s Pride Peanut Butter” and “King Nut Peanut Butter.”

The salmonella outbreak has been linked to eight deaths and 500 cases of illness in 43 states.

Federal officials have released a detailed inspection report (pdf file) outlining the unsanitary conditions found at PCA’s Georgia plant – including mold and roaches – and has confirmed the company shipped peanut products despite knowing the products were contaminated with salmonella.
