A Granite City woman is suing Gateway Regional Medical Center, alleging her knee was seriously injured when she slipped and fell on water accumulated on the hospital floor due to a clogged drain.

The woman claims on June 6 while on the way to bathroom in the hallway of the medical center she slipped and fell on the floor, according to the lawsuit filed October 16 in Madison County Circuit Court.

As a result of the fall, the suit claims - she has suffered severe injuries to her left knee and leg that has caused her disability and will continue to cause physical pain and mental anguish.

The suit also claims she has lost earning and become responsible for medical expenses.

The hospital was negligent because it failed to properly keep the sewer drain free of debris, failed to clean the drain to prevent its clogging, permitted debris to accumulate in the drain, failed to properly place absorbent materials around the drain or in the hallway and failed to prevent water from entering the hallway, according to the suit.

The lawsuit seeks a judgment in excess of $75,000, plus costs.
