An 18-Wheeler driving on Interstate 37 in Corpus Christi overturned and spilled 5,000 gallons of No. 6 fuel oil onto Harbor Bridge. The 18-Wheeler accident happened at the end of August. Crews had to work to keep the fuel oil from going into the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. The police department believes that the driver was speeding on the turn and that is why the truck overturned.

Cmdr. Brian Uhler with the Corpus Christi Police Department said Monday afternoon the incident still was being investigated. The driver was taking a turn from I-37 onto the entrance ramp to the Harbor Bridge when the truck overturned. Several accidents involving trucks have occurred at that turn.

It is believed that the cleanup process will probably take a week. Sixty-seven tons of sand were brought in to help contain the fuel oil.

This is not the first tanker truck accident in the area. A tanker truck carrying oil crashed in 2004 at the Tancahua Street bridge.
